The Application for Scholarships project focuses on methods for remote sensing monitoring of habitats Natura 2000 as develop pan-European multi-approach to the specific requirements of the various (administrative) levels on the state of biodiversity. MS.Monina and reflects the characteristics and diversity of habitats in different biogeographical regions. Application for Scholarships Geoinformatics section of the TU Berlin is involved in any work of tools of geometric and semantic interoperability test cases for three different scales and applied in Germany, Belgium and Greece for the indicators of NATURA 2000. Also, the spatial modeling of potential habitats in biogeographic part of the project tasks.

Tasks:
- Development of scale-dependent ontologies for the three test cases in accordance with pre-defined NATURA 2000 indicator sets, including the transfer between test cases.
- Development of a geometric and semantic interoperability tool
- investigating the possible up-and downscaling of the test classes
- spatial modelling of potential habitats at the biogeographical level with pre-defined European geodata-sets
- Dissemination of methods and results at conferences and in scientific journals

Requirements:
- University degree (MA / Diploma) in geoinformatics, geography, geo-ecology, environmental sciences or comparable with focus on interoperability of spatial data.
- keen interest and knowledge in techniques and methods of ontology building with basic knowledge of semantic web language (OWL / RDF)
- strong skills in GIS software (especially ArcGIS) and knowledge of at least one related computer language (preferred Python)

Application for Scholarships in Materials and Surface Technology

Department of Mechanical Engineering is looking for 3 Ph.D. in Materials and Surface Technology related to strengthen our strategic research activities in Materials in Sustainable Energy Applications.

The Application for Scholarships section for Materials and Surface Engineering is involved in externally financed national and international strategic research programs through which the following Ph.D. positions have become available:

Modeling of high temperature corrosion of metals in biomass-fired power plants (financed through the Danish Research Council for Strategic Research)

This PhD project addresses the modeling of the interaction of metallic materials with aggressive environments as occurring in biomass fired power plants, most notably under hot corrosion conditions. A combination of materials modeling and experimental investigations under laboratory conditions will be used to arrive at designing alternative materials that potentially can withstand hot corrosion environments.

Alternative coatings for protection against high temperature corrosion (financed though EU 7th frame work program

This PhD project addresses the protection of metallic materials exposed to aggressive gas atmospheres at elevated temperatures. The development/investigation of thin ceramic coatings deposited on high temperature materials will be the main task in the project, i.e. surface engineering for high temperature corrosion protection. The project encompasses the disciplines metallurgy, surface engineering and chemistry.

Failure mechanisms in metallic components of Wind turbine drive trains (financed through the Danish Research Council for Strategic Research)

The PhD project addresses the investigation of failure mechanisms in gears and bearings of wind turbine drive trains in relation to the manufacturing history, the materials choice and the drift conditions (among which lubrication and loading history). The ultimate goal is to propose optimized materials choice and materials manufacturing to withstand typical loading conditions.

Starting date: As soon as possible.

Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship Program

Scholarships are for student and research exchanges at the graduate level. The Government of Canada offers scholarships to Canadian publicly funded universities or colleges as part of the Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship Program (CCSP) and Government of Canada Awards (GCA). Publicly funded Canadian institutions must submit applications on behalf of candidate. CBIE does not accept applications submitted directly by candidate or partner institutions (foreign institutions).

Canadian faculty members who are submitting applications should notify the international relations department of their respective institutions. By doing so, this will assist with central coordination by the institution in the event that multiple applications need to be prioritized.Open to all disciplines including interdisciplinary programs. Projects with a scientific research component will be prioritized.
